Basic Etiquette For Waiters In Restaurants

There is nothing worse than having a dining experience ruined by an obnoxious waiter. Even though certain behaviors are obviously inappropriate, some waiters in restaurants still do the most annoying things. Here are some dos and don’ts for waiters that will make eating out a better experience for everyone.

For starters, don’t hang around the guests while they are eating. Shortly after their food has been served, you should pop over and make sure they are satisfied with everything. Then leave them alone to enjoy their meals. Scan the room frequently to see if any of your patrons are trying to get your attention.

Also, don’t pressure them into making a decision about ordering if they are not ready. If they say that they need a few minutes, actually give them a few minutes before you come back. Don’t come back in 1 minute with pen in hand. If they are not sure what they want, don’t roll your eyes or otherwise express annoyance. It really shouldn’t matter to you how long it takes them to order anyway.

Whenever a restaurant customer has a complaint, no matter what, tell them you are sorry for the inconvenience. Do this even if you did nothing wrong. Don’t argue with them or make excuses. Just tell them you will get the problem solved and then go do so. If you personally can’t fix things, get somebody who can.

One of the most overlooked pieces of waiter etiquette is the removal of dishes after the meal. Many waiters make it seem as though there is a plate shortage in the kitchen. Before a patron has the chance to swallow their last bit of food, the waiter is appearing asking if he may take away her dishes. This is rude and very off-putting. If customers want their plates removed, they will set them to the side or ask you to come get them.

Another note about dishes is this: do not, I repeat, DO NOT remove one person’s plates if another person is still eating. This is one of the most basic concepts and yet it is shocking how many waiters still do this. Removing one person’s plate sends the message that it is time to finish eating. It makes the person who is still eating feel uncomfortable, especially if he or she is the only one.

Additionally you should never chomp on gum or play with your hair while talking to customers. Don’t shout or argue with other employees when diners can hear you. Don’t light up a cigarette where they can see you. No whining about how tired you are how you can’t wait to go home. Do not yawn or act bored or otherwise give off the impression that serving them is a nuisance for you. And by all means don’t count your tips in view of people eating. Nor should you hint at getting tips.

Just be pleasant. Always make sure your uniform is clean and pressed and that your hair is combed and neat. Make sure each customer gets at least one smile and speak to them politely. Be sure to thank them before they leave and tell them you were happy to serve them. Even if you weren’t.
