The Different Brainwave States

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

Using binaural beats will allow you to achieve varied states of mind rather easily. These various frequencies allow your mind to tune into different states. These states assist with a varying number of items, including helping in positive thinking, focus, learning, relaxing, achieving a meditative state and many more.

Over a century ago, the advantages of binaural beats were discovered. It was determined that by playing varying frequencies into the ears, it could have an effect on the frequency that the brain operates at. As an example, if you wanted to tune your brain into a similar state that deeper sleep gives you, a frequency of about one to three hertz (hertz are changes per minute) could be played into your ears. And today, just a simple CD or MP3 player is required to get your brainwave frequency where you want it.

One of the questions you may be asking yourself is how someone’s mind can “tune in” to a frequency. In order to do this, two different sounds (one in each ear) will be played at similar (but different) Hertz. For instance, in the case of binaural beats, a tone could be played at 50 Hz in one ear and at 55 Hz in the opposite ear. What this creates is a “difference” of 5 Hz, which causes the binaural beat. This beat then creates the state of mind that your mind will tune into.

There are four different categories that are mentioned when discussing the different states. They are called theta, delta, beta, and alpha. It is possible you have heard some of these terms before, and they are usually referenced when discussing binaural beats.

The first category is between the 13 Hz to 25 Hz range and assists to achieve a state of alertness and also helps remove anxiety and stress. This is the range for beta frequencies.

The second frequency range would be the alpha frequencies. The alpha frequencies range from 8 to 12 Hz. When the binaural beat is delivered in this range, it assists in “superlearning,” positive thinking, and also a state of light relaxation.

The third category is the theta frequencies. Frequencies in the theta range are from 4 to 7 Hz. This range of frequencies can result in better focus, memory improvement, deep relaxation, and is great for meditation.

The last category is called the delta range. These frequencies are primarily responsible for deeper sleep, increased immune functions, and lucid dreaming.

From this article you can see that binaural beats can be utilized to induce quite a number of mental states. With each of these states, benefits can be had for the listener, even if the listener does not have any prior experience with binaural beats at all. All they require is an open mind.
