A Ceramic Tile Counter Top Is The Way To Go

Monday, June 28th, 2010

The latest trend in kitchen counter tops or worktops, as they are also called, is to cover them in ceramic tiles. The ceramic tiles are the same ones that go on your floor or walls. people no longer want the old MDF plastic coated worktops, pretty as they seemed to be until not so long ago. They are now so old-fashioned, darling! You simply must have a ceramic tile counter top in the kitchen.

There is such a broad range of ceramic tiles too. There are thousands of styles of tiles in dozens of materials. There are stone, slate, ceramic and quarry tiles to name but a few of the materials used to make tiles. However, the majority of individuals go for the ceramic tiles for their counter top, because there is more choice and they are less expensive.

Some of the styles obtainable for a ceramic tile counter top are plain, riven, patterned, mosaic, floral, rustic, country or artistic, but really, the world is your oyster when it comes to choosing ceramic tiles. They are also available in different sizes, but the most common are: 25 mm (one inch); 150 mm (six inches); 225 mm (nine inches) and 300 mm (one foot).

As you likely already know from your preceding experience with tiling the kitchen and bathroom, ceramic tiles are very versatile. They can be cut or snapped fairly easily, once you get the knack and they are easily laid down although some tilers prefer one method and others another.

In Europe tiles are normally laid on lines of adhesive which have been spread with an adhesive applicator. This method uses roughly half the adhesive you would normally use. In Asia they tend to lay tiles on a full bed of cement. It does not matter which method you use for walls or your counter top as the tiles will not be subject to any weight.

A ceramic tile counter top in the kitchen is an outstanding idea because there is plenty of variety, they are easy to lay, hard-wearing and heat-resistant. It is a surprise that they did not catch on a long time ago.

Some people count the ceramic tiles above the work surface as part of the counter top although it is not really. It is part of the wall tiling. Anyway, choose your tiles carefully, because you will be seeing them frequently. A lot of people choose to have an off-white splashback with several picture tiles placed at random but with a panel of six or eight tiles making a fresco in the centre. A granite counter top cut tidily around your hob and sink looks fantastic. This style works best if you have a built-in sink and cooker.

Black is too severe for many, so they might choose a lighter, say, marbled tile. This looks lovely too. It is all a matter of getting the colours of the splashback and the counter top co-ordinated well, but it is not hard. You could also have a frieze in the ceramic tile counter top. If you are stuck for ideas, just walk around a home improvement centre and look at their show kitchens. What they have in MDF, you can do in ceramic tiles.

Is It A Good Idea To Remodel Your Kitchen Yourself?

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

Are you one of those who wants or has to renovate your kitchen? Are you doing it because your kitchen is old-fashioned and tired-looking or because you are bored with it? How are you thinking of going about it? There are after all two ways of going about remodeling your kitchen. Specifically, you can either remodel your kitchen yourself or you can hire someone else, hopefully a professional, to remodel your kitchen for you.

If you are a keen hobbyist or do-it-yourselfer then there is no reason why you cannot remodel your kitchen yourself. If you decide that you would like to remodel your kitchen yourself, you should first work out what you would like your new kitchen to look like, then determine which skills will be required to complete the jobs and then decide whether you possess the requisite skills to conclude the renovation work.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both approaches. The main disadvantage of having a professional builder remodel your kitchen is the cost, which differs, but can be quite high. The advantages are that the job will be carried out quickly and well and if it is not done well, than you deny payment. You will also get a guarantee.

The disadvantages of renovating your kitchen yourself include possibly not getting as good a finish as with a professional and the burden on your free time, if you have a full-time job. There can also be a great deal of nuisance because it will take you longer. This frequently leads to arguments with your partner.

The advantages when you remodel your kitchen yourself are a saving on costs and greater flexibility. When you hire a professional contractor, you will describe what you want either verbally or via a drawing. The contractor will give you a quote based on those specifications, but jobs like this seldom finish as the specifications predict.

There are invariably variations and this is where some builders bump the costs up, realizing that you are half-way through the job and cannot change builder easily. If you are remodelling your kitchen yourself you can change your plans whenever you like.

A high percentage of do-it-yourself remodelling jobs either go wrong or just never get finished because the DIYer realizes all to late that he either does not have the necessary skills or just does not have the time. Every contractor has stories of wives phoning in tears saying that she and the family have been living in a tip for six months and that she just must have the job done. Invariably the husband DIYer will only get home every night after the builders have left. In the UK, they are called botch jobs.

Botch jobs are more costly to put right than it would have cost to do the work professionally in the first place. This is often because the renovation was started because the kitchen was in a bad condition – the tiles and the plaster was literally falling off the walls, but after someone has put new plaster or tiling on badly, it is nevertheless new and very hard and harder to remove.

The lesson of this is to be very aware of your personal building skills before you start to remodel your kitchen yourself.

Food: Five Tips For Keeping Food

Monday, May 31st, 2010

There can not be many people who do not like food, but the human race, being what it is, I guess there are a few. For the rest of us, eating is a source of daily enjoyment and, like drink, it is often used to mark a celebration. not only that, but different foodstuffs are used for the different meals or definite celebrations.

Festive meals were indubitably planned around the seasonal foods available, but some foods were transported great distances for the benefit of those who could pay for them. For example, my Dad thought it was a great treat to get an orange in his stocking on Christmas Day 60 years ago. How times have changed, very few children would think an orange a present, special or otherwise, any day of the year these days.

Nonetheless, the storage of food is still a daily concern and so, I have listed a few top tips on storing food hereunder, so that you will get the best from what you have bought or grown long afterward.

The Smells Of Summer: the scent of fresh garden herbs are one of the pleasures of Summer. You can preserve many of these herbs in the following way. Take a suitably sized glass bottle and cram your favourite herb into it until you can get not get even one more leaf in. Then fill it to the brim with your favourite oil olive oil (salad oil, not cooking oil). Put it in the strong sunlight for two days if you are using basil or two weeks for tarragon. Allow the water to part from the oil and decant the oil off into another bottle. Just one or two drops of this oil on a salad or spaghetti will bring back Summer memoirs.

Bin Ends: sometimes, after a party for example, you may wake up to several small quantities of wine in different bottles. Of course, you can pour like wines into each other. When you are done, pour a teaspoon of olive oil into each bottle. This will create an air proof barrier over the wine thereby preserving the wine for another week or two to accompany your favourite dinners – in the cooking process naturally.

Storing Garlic: cloves of peeled garlic will keep for months if you stuff them into a screw-topped jar and cover them with olive oil. As you use the garlic, top up with more olive oil. The oil will absorb some of the flavour of the garlic and make a fabulous (basis for a) salad dressing. If you have used tinned garlic, the rest can be preserved in the same way, but you should rinse and dry them first.

Saving Tomato Paste: if you suspect that you will not be able to use up the left over half a tin or tube of tomato paste soon, you can put it into the ice cube tray and freeze it into blocks until you are ready to use it.

Parsley Crumble: keep bunches of parsley in the deep freeze. Then, when you require it, you can just crumple the head of the bunch in your hand directly over the pan or plate where you require it and put it back in the freezer. The stalks can be used in the stock pot. in fact, this technique works for all herbs.

What Coffee Drinkers Need To Be Aware Of About Coffee Drinking

Friday, May 14th, 2010

If you find yourself drinking coffee on a regular basis, you’ve probably thought about this at some point or another. You may even think about it every day, if you’re as anxious as I am.

Coffee tastes great and it provides some definite benefits to those who drink it, including significant boosts in energy. And there are hundreds of millions of people around the world who just wouldn’t want to live without it.

Many studies have been conducted on the effects of coffee, and they’ve found that a single cup of coffee can boost productivity by increasing a person’s alertness and sharpening his or her focus. If you’re looking for a way to work more efficiently, coffee might be a great way to give yourself a boost.

It’s clear that coffee can give us a mental boost, but unfortunately it’s still unclear whether it has a positive effect, a negative effect, or no effect at all on physical health. Coffee drinkers are likely to insist that it’s a harmless and innocent beverage, but others say that it can cause a variety of health problems.

Some research has shown that coffee does play a part in raising blood pressure levels when consumed regularly. It also increases heart rate, and these two effects together can frighten many people into avoiding coffee.

However, the same research points out that for such ill effects to be caused by coffee, an individual would have to consume large amounts over a long period of time. A cup a day, or something in that range, likely won’t cause any health problems.

Anti-oxidants are another subject that comes up in the discussion over the health benefits of coffee. Some recent studies have shown the presence of anti-oxidants in coffee beans, which are powerful compounds that may help reduce the risk of contracting diseases such as cancer. Coffee is an all-natural beverage, so it’s not far-fetched that it might contain these helpful agents. Red wine, another natural product, has also been identified as an anti-oxidant carrying beverage.

Whatever your beliefs on coffee, it’s still important to consume it in moderation, as with any food or beverage. Even if something hasn’t been definitively proven to be unhealthy, it’s still easy to overindulge and have too much of one thing. Always be careful with stimulants such as coffee, especially as you grow older.

How To Celebrate Mother’s Day With Your Kids

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

With Mother’s Day approaching, children and fathers have a wonderful opportunity to show mom how much she means to the family. This can sometimes be a little stressful for dads as kids come to them looking for ideas of special things to do for mom. But this doesn’t have to be stressful.

One simple but very popular Mother’s Day treat is to make breakfast for mom. This is a tradition in many families.

A tea party is another idea that little girls will especially love. Mothers and daughters can dress alike try poodle skirts and really make it a fun day. Hip Hop has child and adult poodle skirts as well as little bow ties for the boys.

Another idea is a dance. Little kids love to dance, and so will mom, particularly after she sees how excited her kids are about the dance that they planned and set up.

How about cleaning the house for mom? What mother wouldn’t love to wake up on Mother’s Day to a clean house and the smell of breakfast being cooked for her? Make sure you let her sleep in as well this will give you more time to get everything ready!

There are also lots of crafts that the children can do with mom. This creates a fun activity, and the resulting craft can be mom’s gift. This can make a great family tradition, and the craft activities can progress in difficulty from year to year.

How about planning a flower for mom? You could buy her a potted flower plant, or you could start with seeds and go out and plant them together. She’ll be able to enjoy the flowers again and again as they bloom! Another idea is a letter telling mom how special she is.

Dads can help younger children with the writing and with many other ideas. Have them draw a special picture if they are too young to write. What could be more special for a mom on Mother’s Day?

A Great Blueprint For Optimizing Your Kitchen

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

If you are one of those people who spend a lot of time cooking for your family, a well organized kitchen is essential. We have a few tips here that will make life easier for you, and your kitchen a far more attractive one.

There is never enough counter space in our kitchen, and unless you live in a mansion with loads of it then you will have to keep yours as clean and tidy as possible to maximize the space available. The last thing you want is a cluttered kitchen space that makes it difficult to find what you need and unbearable and stressful to cook in.

That energy saving appliance may seem like a great help, but if it takes up loads of your counter it will just be in the way. Buy the ones that fit under the counters if you can.

Another part of the kitchen that should always be kept tidy is your drawers. This saves you having to hunt around for something that you need in a hurry. Separate your knives from your flatware too.

There are many good knife sets that will take up very little space on your counter but have them close at hand. Keeping them in a block or stand will keep your knives sharp too, and you won’t buy more than you need.

The right pans are also essential. Shop around before you buy, you want the kind that are easy to use and clean and aren’t too heavy.

Heavy pans are very popular but when they are full of food they weigh a ton and you don’t want to be struggling to lift them.

Any gadget that cuts down on preparation time is ok by me. I am a professional cook and know how laborious food prepping can be. You want to get the actual cooking part as soon as possible.
