Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Pizza Types

Over the years many types of pizza have been developed. Some styles are regional; others seem to appear all over. This just speaks to the popularity of pizza as a convenient, delicious meal. Whether you bake it yourself or get it delivered from a pizza place, this is one meal that is enjoyed all over the world.

Fans of New York style will fold their slices in half while eating them. This style features a crust that is thin and chewy, topped with a sweet tomato sauce and delicious fresh mozzarella. One of the hallmarks of a real New York pizza is the yellow grease that runs down your arm from the rich cheese. You will not find a pile of toppings on a New York pie… they like to enjoy the genius of a simple pizza.

Ike Sewel came up with the idea for Chicago style in 1943. His version was deep dish, with tall sides on the crust to hold in all the toppings. He wanted a pizza that was not only delicious, but also filling. In Chicago, the cheese is put on first, followed by the toppings and finally by the sauce. A dab of margarine in the pan helps crisp up the crust. This is not a hand held kind of pie… you must use a fork and knife.

California pies feature unusual topping combinations and exotic ingredients. After rising, the crust is baked partially, to keep the crust’s height. The crust should be airy, light, and tender. You will often find California style pies with toppings like smoked salmon, feta cheese, and asparagus. Vegetarian toppings are very popular.

Pan style features a crust that is a bit thicker. Oil is added to the pan before cooking, making a crunchy fried crust bottom. The flavor is also slightly different. All sorts of toppings can be used on pan style.

Cracker style crusts first came into popularity in the 1950s. This style offers a slightly fermented crust so it develops a cracker-like texture. This was a new technique in the history of pizza. A normal thin crust, on the other hand, is still soft inside while being crisp on the outside. It is usually stretched by hand. Thin crust generally has less sauce and toppings than the thicker versions.

Focaccia style pies could be said to be the original version. There is no sauce, just oil, grilled vegetables, and other toppings. This style has been eaten in Europe for generations before the tomatoes were brought back from the New World.

Today, even more types of pizza are being invented. Tex-Mex has a crust that contains some masa, or corn flour. This gives the crust a flavor like a corn chip. They are often topped with Mexican ingredients, like corn, shredded beef, and even picante sauce. Some pizzas that remain regional only change a few ingredients. For instance, in the Midwest, they prefer Provolone cheese instead of fresh mozzarella.

Your big event will be here sooner than you think so you need to start planning your appetizers. With so many different recipes to choose from it can be a daunting task. Should you serve something healthy or fun? What about using a specific cuisine? In addition, everyone loves those appetizers that truly are not good for them.

When you are choosing your appetizers, of course the first consideration is your budget. You may have caviar tastes and a hot dog budget. Luckily, there are so many appetizer recipes out there to choose from that you should be able to find several that will please you and your guests. Label each dish so any guests that have food allergies know which ones to avoid and which ones to enjoy.

There is a world of appetizers at your fingertips. Focus on a single ingredient to form a theme, such as cheese, poultry, or seafood. You can use cheese in quesadillas, cubes or melted on toast tips. Poultry can easily fill kabobs or dumplings. Seafood may appear in crab cakes, dumplings or you can make delectable shrimp or scallops wrapped in bacon. Alternatively, you may want to make a spread of finger sandwiches with a variety of fillings.

For a real Asian crunch, wrap up a crisp water chestnut with sweet, apple-smoked bacon.

No matter what appetizers you choose make sure, you make most of them ahead of time. It will save you a great deal of stress on the day of your event if all you need to do is reheat and serve. You want to have time to enjoy your party as much as your guests.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Entertaining on a Dime

Parties can still be great successes even if you do not have a big budget. You do not need fancy silver serving trays or crystal goblets. Even the simplest fare will look delectable when you present it nicely. You do not need fancy dishes to make your food look great.

Presentation is key. You can serve up the simplest foods and your guests will rave about them if they look good. This is easy to do. Need a tray? Wrap up a piece of cardboard in aluminum foil, shiny side in, please. This gives your “tray” a pewter-like finish. Top it off with a pretty paper doily and you are ready to serve your appetizers. It looks lovely and professional, yet you do not need to spend all afternoon polishing the silver.

If you are a fan of sandwiches for parties, make up a simple sandwich board. Grab a piece of 1 x 4 lumber. Cut it to the length you want… three to six feet is usually adequate. Clean the wood up with a mild detergent and let it dry completely. Wrap the board in waxed paper. Decorate with paper doilies by securing them in place with tape, making sure the lacy bits will face your guests. Your sandwiches can be arranged along the board and it will look lovely.

When you make these sandwiches, use the long loaves of French or Italian bread. Pile on the fixings like tomato, lettuce, and meats. Other delicious ingredients you may want to include are thin slices of cucumber, onion, or avocado. Use decorative toothpicks to hold the sandwich slices together, putting them in before you cut. Once the entire loaf has been made into a sandwich, cut into one inch slices. If you dress the sandwich with a simple oil and vinegar dressing, it suddenly rivals any gourmet sandwich you can buy.

Set out attractive bread baskets you can find at the craft store with baked goods. Simply line the inside with a pretty towel or napkin and fill it up with cookies, muffins, bagels, or rolls. Set out condiments like butter, jam, and cream cheese on small decorative plates so your guests can apply them easily to their choices.

Crackers have gotten very expensive to buy. One way to get a crunchy appetizer without the cost is to make toast points. Toast your favorite bread then cut them on the diagonal. Cut each piece diagonally again. This gives you four pieces for each slice of bread. Serve them with spreads or toppings like cream cheese and olives, or a spoonful of chopped tomatoes and basil.

Hot appetizer recipes can also be served in this manner. Presentation makes the difference in how your food is perceived, no matter how simple the food. You will find that giving a party is a lot easier and less expensive than you think.

Do not forget some beverages. This may be as simple as coffee and tea or you can go a bit further and offer fruit punch or sodas. Simple paper cups will do. Match them up with coordinating napkins and you will be all set for your next big event.

Traditions and Foods for Cinco de Mayo

Lots of residents in the US know a little bit about Cinco de Mayo. Some even celebrate it each year in one way or another. There are many who do not understand its history, however. If you were to ask an average American about why Cinco de Mayo is celebrated, they will likely guess it is Mexican Independence Day. That is not right. Mexican Independence Day falls on September 16.

In the 1950s, the United States’ Good Neighbor Policy encouraged its people to reach out to neighboring lands. This is when Americans were introduced to Cinco de Mayo. In the ’60s, the holiday was pushed further into the public eye by Chicano activists as a way to spark cultural pride amongst Mexican-Americans.

By the time the 1980s rolled around, the holiday had been slowly growing in notoriety. Throughout this decade’s commercialism, Cinco de Mayo had been advertised as an excellent holiday to devote to drinking alcoholic beverages from American companies. It is because of these companies that Cinco do Mayo had become mainstream in American culture, although the true meaning of it, to celebrate Mexico’s victory against the French in 1862, was diluted.

As Cinco de Mayo became more mainstream, more Americans wanted to explore better ways to celebrate. They began researching the Mexican traditions, foods, and music that would make Cinco de Mayo a holiday to anticipate every year.

Cinco de Mayo has become a wonderful reason to indulge ourselves with margaritas, nachos and all things Latino. You can get all dressed up in bright traditional clothing, grab some sombreros, throw a Mexican flag up on the wall, hang dried chilies around the house and just have fun. The schools teach about this holiday, so have your children share what they have learned and incorporate it all into your celebration.

Some people plan big parties for the 5th of May. It is no longer a holiday just for the Mexican community. People from all ethnic groups join in the fun. Some communities have festivals and parades to help the celebration mood. In some big cities, the celebration has grown to large proportions. Los Angeles, New York and Port Huron, Michigan are sites of very large Cinco de Mayo celebrations.

You can always stay home and celebrate with friends and family. To plan your celebration right, start thinking about how you can cook Cinco de Mayo food, find salsa music and supply fun and colorful decorations. Your private bash can become as fashionable as the community parties thrown around town can.

Cinco de Mayo is a great reason to explore those Mexican recipes you have been curious about. Make some great food for your family to enjoy and share some Mexican culture. Invite your friends to come over and have them bring some snacks.
